Getting Clarity!
Posted by admin in Brian's Blog, Tip Of The Week
Was talking to a new coaching client about where his business is now. His comments echoed comments I have heard from many others. He said he is closing about the same amount of volume as a year ago, in his case, 7-8 closings a month. But his sales and profits are down 30%. He was working harder to close loans, making less, and generally no longer had a passion for the business. He had lost his vision. Does that sound like you?
We can not go any further until he re-captures the vision for his business. Whether he morphs into commercial, or re-focuses on his residential, he needs to spend the time to capture the vision for his business again. You see, creating a strategic plan without your vision is like playing baseball without a ball-it is just a lot of swinging at air. Catching a vision for your life is critical to bringing the passion, excitement and enthusiasm needed to take your business to the next level. So how can we get clarity on our vision?
First, you need to step away from the business-get out of the office, go somewhere quiet, no kids, no distractions. When you are in the heat of the day, you will make decisions based on pressure and circumstances but that is re-active thinking. The best plans happen when you are out of the pressure cooker of the day and thinking PRO-actively on your business.
Second, ask yourself this question, “Why am I doing this?” Don’t just pawn it off with a simple, “to make money” answer. Get down to the core of your being-why are you here? What is your purpose?
Some other helpful questions, “If money were no object, what would you do for a living?” This question can give you clues into pre-disposed passions in your life. Listing all your strengths and weaknesses is huge as well. Most of my marketing keys around my writing and conference calls, which is something that is unique to me. You should not forget the spiritual side of your life either. What do you feel the Lord telling you to do? Look back at past successes and failures-what did they teach you? It was in answering these types of questions that I came to the realization that I am not a great CEO. I was great at casting vision, definitely important as a CEO, but that is really a sales function anyway. I am a great salesperson. That is where the Lord has gifted me. But I was horrible at the accountability piece which is so important to being a world class CEO. I hold myself accountable, I just have no patience with those who can not do the same. This is why I partnered with Nick Van Nice when offering our coaching program. I am involved early on with the vision casting and strategic plan, a huge strength of mine. Then we turn it over to Nick to help with execution and the accountability needed to close the gap between knowing and doing. Nick is one of the best I have ever seen at holding people accountable in a firm fashion without being overbearing at all. Together, we are a great combination.
What is beautiful about this business is you can craft a plan that is uniquely yours. You can work it to where you are spending most of the day in activities that you excel at and be striving toward a big prize that YOU want, that you are passionate about. But it takes thinking and planning. You MUST step outside your daily routine and get clarity on your mission and vision.
