Have You Cast Your Vision Today?

When I was a young man, I came across a self-help classic by Napoleon Hill entitled, Think and Grow Rich. In this book, Hill wrote, “As a man thinks in his mind, so is he.” In other words, what you focus your mind on is what you will become. I must have read it 20 times over the course of my life! I am not here to preach a sermon, but this is a critical lesson for the mortgage broker or Realtor. You are in trouble if you don’t change the way you think. If you think the market is tougher than 2006, then you are thinking your way to an early grave! We are in a great market but it is THIS market, not 2006. You must begin to believe the truth: there is plenty of business in your town.  In fact, you can not write up all the business in your town.   But, you must believe it first. Most people want to be rich and successful, but deep down they do not believe they are worth it. They say one thing consciously while they subconsciously sabotage themselves. In fact, you may be doing it yourself; so, perhaps you can relate to one of the following examples:

 ■ You prequalify a customer, and he/she qualifies, but your client needs to check with a spouse before committing to a listing appointment.  You let him/her know that you will follow up the next day, but then something “comes up,” and you don’t get around to it until the following week. Your client, of course, goes elsewhere. That’s sabotage!

 ■ You try a new “system,” and it works the first week. You get two new deals, but then you get behind the following week and eventually forget all about it. Sabotage!

 ■ You write up six deals this month and then create all sorts of reasons why you need to spend the entire next month closing them out so you will only write up one  deal next month. This, too, is sabotage! Sabotage is subtle, and it shows up in many ways (e.g., running around in crisis mode or making calls and act ally hoping you will get an answering machine instead of speaking to a live customer, etc). The problem is that you do not believe you are worth “x” amount of money even though that is your goal. You start in the business, and you begin to complete the tasks that are necessary for you to reach your goal.

After all, we can make so much money in this business so easily. But, since you are not accustomed to an amount above what you are used to making, as soon as you get close, your subconscious feels uneasy. Unbeknownst to you, you begin to sabotage yourself and actually find things to do other than the things that were bringing you your initial success. Yet, if you would have just kept going, you would have broken through. We all have a comfort zone, but, as soon as we get close to breaking through that comfort zone, we feel uneasy and subconsciously try to get back to that comfort zone—even if it offers less of a life than we desire. So, how can we break this pattern and move on to massive success? The key is to actually envision what it looks like to have that type of income. Get a clear mental picture of what your business would look like if this goal was already attained, and begin to focus on that mental picture. Be specific. Where will you live? What will you drive? How much will you give to charity? The more specific you are, the more real it becomes. Then, focus on that picture, and believe you already have it.

The mind cannot differentiate between real and imagined. If you imagine that you already have it, you will actually get the subconscious mind working towards that vision instead of sabotaging it. You must develop a vision so clear that you begin to feel uncomfortable in your present situation. When you do that, your mind starts moving you toward your vision. The silly obstacles that you allow to throw you off will be brushed aside like gnats, and you will be moving boldly toward the future you have envisioned. You actually get the subconscious mind working for you, not against you. Soon, you won’t be sabotaging yourself; you will be consistent, focused and thriving, and it will seem easier to write 10 loans a week than it was to write one.

The key is to see yourself and your vision clearly and to believe it. I was a millionaire in my mind even while I was dirt poor and having my car repossessed. So, it happened in the mind first. In fact, all great achievers and achievements happen in the mind first before they happen in reality. Remember, how you think is how you will become! Follow this simple, three-step formula to make this real in your life:

1. Write down your mission statement. This should be short, to the point and flow off the tongue easily. You want it simple and easily memorized. This should be something that fires you up.

2. Set a one-year goal (in line with your mission statement). This should be a specific channel marker on your way to accomplishing your mission. It can have a dollar figure associated with it. It needs to be that specific! For example, your goal may read: “I will help three people a week get into homes.”

3. Write a one- to two-paragraph vision statement. This is an actual description of what your life will look like after you have attained your one-year goal. What does your bank account, your home, your car, your relationships, your free time, etc., look like? The more specific you are, the more real it becomes. (This third step is actually the most important and the one most people fail to do, which is why they don’t meet their goals.)

Once you do this, simply keep your vision close to your heart. Think about it daily, and focus on it. As you do, the mind will begin making you uncomfortable in your present surroundings and soon you will be moving effortlessly toward your goal. Soon, you will become what you envisioned—it has been that way for anyone who has ever achieved a thing of worth, and it could be that way for you. So, try this simple, three-step technique, hold your vision dear and watch your mind make it a reality!
